The development of Vestavia Hills as a residential suburb began in 1946, when developer Charles Byrd planned a subdivision for approximately 1,000 people on the southern flank of Shades Mountain. The local garden club moved the gazebo to a prominent outcropping closer to the highway, there to serve as a landmark gateway into the community. The church met in the temple like structure for several years before demolishing a portion of the building in 1971 to make way for a larger building a central portion of the original building remains. The extensive gardens, populated by statuary and peacocks, surrounded a smaller domed gazebo patterned after the Temple of Sibyl in Tivoli.Īfter Ward's death, the house, something of a tourist stop near the highway between Birmingham and Montgomery, was used as a tearoom and reception hall before being purchased by Vestavia Hills Baptist Church. The 2 + 1⁄ 2-story house was patterned after the circular Temple of Vesta in Rome, with dark pink sandstone walls encircled by 20 massive white Doric columns surmounted by a carved entablature. Ward's mansion at the Vestavia estate became a landmark in the area as soon as it was completed in 1925. It was situated on the crest of Shades Mountain in what is now the northern edge of the city. One of the worst burgers I’ve ever had.Vestavia Hills is named for the 20-acre (8.1 ha) estate of former Birmingham mayor George B. I would’ve been upset with my mean today if it came from a Wendy’s. The second star for this review is in respect to the past in which I’ve enjoyed the restaurant. I will be eating wings at Bdubs and Dreamland and will get my burgers at Mugshots or Jack Browns. It will take an adjustment in prices and good word of mouth before I give the restaurant I once loved another opportunity. I will not be back for a long time and may never eat here again. Also, my drink order, a classic diet soda, was messed up twice before it was corrected. My friends beer sat at the bar for 15 minutes before The waitress brought it to the table on multiple occasions. The loaded fries we ordered as an app were good but were also $10 where as before they were $7.99. The ranch has been changed recently too as today it had a very bad twist on it. The burger patty itself was straight up nasty and the toppings all tasted as if they were frozen and microwaved. Today the burger tasted like roadkill trash. Tonight I had the OMG burger, which I’ve had several times before and enjoyed each time prior to today. On top of the price change, the quality of food has tanked immensely. Not to mention the lack of wing specials, where Buffalo Wild Wings has 2 bogo nights per week. These prices are moderately acceptable in my opinion for smoked wings from a top notch bbq restaurant such as Moe’s Original or Saws BBQ, but not for a fried wing. 4 wings are now $8 and 8 will now cost you $12. The sampler has increased one dollar in price and features three less wings that before where as the wing selections from the regular menu have increased as well. prices on their Alabama staple wings and are no longer worth the price. I’ve always been willing to pay slightly more for their wings than say Buffalo Wild Wings and have enjoyed the burgers and apps time and time again as well.
